Kushana's Mother [1] is the second wife of the Vai Emperor and the step-mother of the Three Princes. Her given name is not revealed in the text.
She was married to the previous Emperor and had Kushana, whose lineage marked a major tension from the succeeding Vai Emperor and Three Princes. When Kushana was a child, she drank a glass of wine that was poisoned with "a fearful poison that drives the spirit mad" as it was meant to be given to her daughter as part of many plots against her.
As a result, she is irrevocably insane. Kushana visits her before leaving for the Periphery Campaign. She protects a doll that she names Kushana from her real daughter. Kushana leaves her, promising to "smash the fangs of those who have tormented you and your daughter, my lady."
Trivia[]
- The madness of Kushana's Mother--even down to treating dolls as their daughter due to said condition--may have been an inspiration for Kyoko in Evangelion, which Hideaki Anno produced after his animation for Nausicaa's movie adaptation.
