The Vai Emperor is the king of Torumekia and Kushana's step-father. He succeeded the previous Emperor by marrying the prior Emperor's widow until being driven mad from drinking poisoned wine intended for the widow's daughter as a means to secure the throne. Furthermore, The Vai Emperor conspired with the Three Princes to force Kushana to rebel when she was ordered to invade Dorok during the Periphery Campaign[1]. Despite the Vai Emperor and the Three Princes sharing blood relations and a common goal, he showed little to no care towards them to the point of seeing them as usurpers rather than actual heirs.
The Vai Emperor plays an important role in the end of the manga, protecting Nausicaa from the crypt's light [2] before dying.[3] Before his death, he gave Kushana the advice not to kill any of the royal court, "kill a single one and you will end up as I did, killing and killing again" [4].
